Paris Slams 'Childish' Lebanese Differences, Puts Some Blame on Aoun and Rejects Syrian Meddling Excuses
An official French source has said Syrian interference in Lebanon's affairs is now "from the past" and put the cabinet crisis blame on "childish" behavior by Lebanese politicians.
The source told As Safir daily in remarks published Thursday that the "politicians' childish differences" and their "unconvincing excuses about the need for sectarian balance" are hindering the government formation process.

"The cabinet should be formed because there is no logical reason that prevents formation," he said.

"Syrian interference is now from the past … (French) Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner 'questioned' (Syrian) President Bashar Assad three times on his stance from the formation of the Lebanese cabinet and received pledges … that Syria will not obstruct the formation of the national unity government in Lebanon," the source told As Safir.

He said the Damascus regime sees the possible visit by Premier-designate Saad Hariri to Syria as "valuable."

The source also put some blame on Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun for non-formation of the cabinet although he said the MP had shown readiness to make concessions during a meeting with Kouchner.

"Michel Aoun was subjected to deceit by politicians throughout his political career. But since he has become one of them, he became the best in the sphere of the worst," the source told the newspaper.

As for Hariri, Paris has now "the impression that he enjoys the characteristics of the strong man who could become a prominent statesman," the source added.
