Unexpected Champion of Elite Cup 2009
Football in Lebanon is stepping up as new candidates get hold of local tournaments.

Safaa football team was declared champion of the 12th edition of Elite Cup which has been won over for many years by Lebanese football giants such as Nejmeh and Ansar.

The tournament, organized by the Lebanese Football Federation, witnessed some exciting encounters between teams labeled as favorites and new aspirers. The outcome was an all-too-unexpected champion when Safaa football team won over Ahed, last year's winner, at Bourj Hammoud Municipal Stadium on Sunday with 2 goals to one.

The Cup was delivered by the representative of the Lebanese Football Federation, Rimon Semaan, to the Safaa Captain Amer Khan after the game.

After a six year hegemony by Lebanese football giants like Nejmeh and Ansar, last year's title holders and the current champions, Ahed and Safaa give a fresh breath to football in Lebanon.
