U.N. Chief Fears 'Confrontation' if No Lebanon Agreement Reached
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon feared that if the feuding political factions failed to reach consensus on a presidential candidate by a Nov. 23 election deadline, confrontation is likely to occur.
"I just visited Lebanon to promote the election of a President within the established timeframe and constitutional procedures, without foreign interference and respecting the relevant Security Council resolutions," Ban told a briefing to an informal meeting of the General Assembly.
"Should the parties fail to reach agreement by 24 November, there is a real possibility of a confrontation, he cautioned.
Ban said that meanwhile, the U.N. Secretariat "is making good progress" in the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to try suspects in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
"I thank those Member States that have pledged or provided assistance for the establishment of the Tribunal," Ban added.
