25 People Hospitalized after Inhaling Chlorine in Minieh
Twenty-five people were hospitalized in Minieh after inhaling chlorine and drinking water containing high doses of the chemical, An Nahar and As Safir newspapers reported Wednesday.
An Nahar said workers at Minieh-Dinniyeh water authority accidentally spilled high levels of chlorine in a drinking water reservoir in al-Nabi Yousheh - Haret al-Dahibiyyeh, causing the dispersion of the chemical in the air.
Head of the health authority in the north Mohammed Ghemrawi told An Nahar that "media reports are exaggerated." He added that the infected citizens were hospitalized at the expense of the health ministry.
Ghemrawi also urged the water and environment ministries to identify the source of pollution and urged residents in the north not to use drinking water.
An Nahar said Speaker Nabih Berri gave instructions to Khalifeh to treat the victims at the expense of the health ministry and Energy and Water Minister Jebran Bassil to send a team of experts to examine the infected water reservoir.
The speaker also asked Interior Minister Ziad Baroud to urge the Governor of the North Nassif Qaloush to take all measures that guarantee the safety of citizens.
