Suleiman to Arab Economic Summit in Kuwait: Committed to Arab Peace Initiative
President Michel Suleiman on Sunday prepared to leave for Kuwait to take part in the Arab Economic Summit carrying with him the same stance announced during the Doha Summit on Gaza: Commitment to the Arab peace initiative.
The local media said Suleiman is aware of Lebanon's complicated and factionalized political structure and therefore he is keen to remain at an equal distance from everybody.

Suleiman's stance at the Doha summit last week drew criticism from Lebanon's minority, spearheaded by Hizbullah, over his objection to the reference of suspending the Arab peace initiative and insisting that its objection would be mentioned at the Doha summit's concluding statement.

As-Safir daily cited three reasons for Suleiman's decision:

- The initiative was adopted during an Arab summit held in the Lebanese capital.
- Suspension of the initiative is inconsistent with the Lebanese government's policy statement and Suleiman's oath.
- Suleiman made it clear to the Arab leaders attending the Doha summit the initiative is the only document that adopts the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

Official sources have welcomed Suleiman's speech at the Doha summit where he held onto the Arab peace initiative, stressed that the meeting should not worsen inter-Arab relations and all participants should reach a common stance in support of Gaza.
