US Calls for Release of Syrian Dissident Labwani, all Prisoners of Conscience
The United States has called on Syria to release imprisoned opposition figure Kamal Labwani as well as other prisoners of conscience.
Labwani, founder of the Democratic Liberal Gathering in Syria, was arrested on November 8 in Damascus after returning from a visit to France and the United States.
"Syrian authorities have denied the fundamental right to freedom of opinion and expression" to Labwani and other prisoners of conscience, the White House said in a statement commemorating Human Rights Day.
President Bush "calls on the Syrian Government to immediately and unconditionally release Dr. Labwani and all other prisoners of conscience, including Habib Saleh and Nizar Rastanawi."
Bush also called for the release of "those arrested after the Damascus Spring: Arif Dalilah, Riad Seif, Mamun al-Homsi, Walid al Bunni, Habib Issa, and Fawaz Tello," the statement read.
Damascus "must cease its harassment of Syrians peacefully seeking to bring democratic reform to their country," the statement added.
Washington is actively involved in supporting Syrian opposition groups.
