Premier Saniora Urges for Ceasefire in Conversation with Rice
Prime Minister Fouad Saniora has held a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in which he urged for a U.N. Security Council vote in favor of a ceasefire to end Israel's fiercest attack on Lebanon in decades.

A government source said Saniora spoke with Rice Thursday, hours before the 15-member Security Council convenes on Friday to discuss the Israeli offensive on Lebanon at the government's request.

The premier told Rice that Israel's bombardment of Lebanon has reached all Lebanese territory and damaged vital infrastructure, the source said.

The Lebanese government called on the U.N. Security Council Thursday to demand a ceasefire and an end to the siege that has been laid on the entire country. About 50 people have so far been killed in the massive assault.
