Mehlis Sets Sept. 10 for his Syria Foray
German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis, who heads the U.N. investigation into Rafik Hariri's assassination, has said he would go to Damascus Sept. 10 to interview five Syrian officials as witnesses in connection with the case.
The Assad government confirmed from the Syrian capital that agreement was reached with Mehlis on Sept. 10 for going to Damascus because the Berlin prosecutor was currently preoccupied with debating the progress of the probe with Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the U.N. in New York.

Syria had originally announced that it had invited Mehlis to Damascus on Monday and Tuesday, but he has informed the Syrian authorities that he would not be available until Sept. 9. So Sept. 10 was set as the final date for the Mehlis Syrian foray.

Mehlis plans to interview Syria's Interior Minister Ghazi Kenaan, former military intelligence chief in Lebanon Rustom Ghazaleh and his two top security aides in Beirut Mohammed Khallouf and Jameh Jameh. The fifth official hasn't been officially named.

Arab press reports suggested the fifth may be President Assad in person. But reports from Damascus denied that Assad would be questioned and said he had agreed with the U.N. to stay away from the interrogation sessions of the four others to avert possible charges of influencing the course of the probe.
