Bush Tells Assad: 'Stop Trying to Intimidate and Destabilize' Lebanon
President Bush has called on Syria to "stop trying to intimidate and destabilize" Lebanon, and to cooperate fully with the U.N. probe into the slaying of former Lebanese Premier Rafik Hariri.
Syria must "stop exporting violence and start importing democracy," Bush said in a speech at Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, marking the Veterans Day holiday and focused on the global war on terrorism.

Addressing veterans and current active-duty military personnel at an army depot, Bush added: "This week, the government of Syria took two disturbing steps.

"First, it arrested Dr. Kamal Labwani for serving as an advocate of democratic reform. Then President Assad delivered a strident speech that attacked both the Lebanese government and the integrity of the (U.N.) investigation into the assassination of Lebanon's former prime minister."

On Thursday, the United States accused Syria of stonewalling the U.N. probe into Hariri's murder and condemned the "appalling" speech Assad made at the Damascus University as an intolerable defiance to the international community.(AFP-Naharnet)
