Greek President at St. Georges Cathedral in Beirut
Greece's President Costis Stephanopoulos opened a Greek-Lebanese business forum in Beirut Thursday, a landmark of a three-day state visit to boost political and economic relations.

Stephanopoulos launched the forum on the second day of the visit. He then called on parliament where he held talks with speaker Nabih Berri, officials said.

The Greek leader also marked his second day in Beirut with a visit to the downtown Greek Orthodox St. George Cathedral, where, Archbishop Elias Awdeh held mass.

Stephanopoulos is scheduled to call on the Balamand University on Friday to inaugurate a Faculty for Environmental Sciences and then heads to Beirut airport to leave Lebanon.

Late Wednesday, Stephanopoulos signed four cooperation protocols in the tourism and agriculture sectors as well as in air and land transport.

Lebanon's imports from Greece amounted to 47 million dollars in 2002 while its exports to Greece stood at nine million dollars.

Lebanon imports from Greece petroleum derivatives, minerals, natural gas, chemicals, textiles and wooden products. It exports to Athens hardware products, fertilizers, clothes, paper goods, tobacco and cigarettes.

Lahoud traveled to Athens in October 2001, on the first such visit by a Lebanese president since 1950.(AFP-Naharnet)
