Israeli Army Claims it Killed Three Hizbullah Fighters Attempting to Infiltrate during Clashes
The Israeli Army claims it killed three Hizbullah fighters who infiltrated into Israel during clashes with its troops over the weekend, Maariv newspaper reported.
The Israeli daily's report, reprinted in Lebanese newspapers Wednesday, said a Hizbullah cell was attempting to reach the Nurit military base located along the border, where it planned to kidnap Israeli soldiers.

It said the infiltration attempt occurred while the Israeli military traded artillery fire with Hizbullah on Sunday.

The article quoted army sources as saying that when the cell members reached a few meters from the base, Israeli troops fired rockets at the infiltrators "apparently killing them."

It quoted a Lieutenant in the Israeli army called "Fares" as saying that he requested tank and helicopter reinforcements to be sent immediately to the base when he realized that his unit would not be able to resist the Hizbullah advance.

Lebanese ambulances picked up the Hizbullah fighters from the battle ground, the article said.

In Sunday's fighting, rockets were fired from Lebanon at Israel's northern region. Israel then launched air strikes against Palestinian and Hizbullah posts in eastern and southern Lebanon killing two militants.

The violence escalated into tit-for-tat crossfire along the border during which Israel unleashed its fiercest artillery barrage since withdrawing from Lebanon in 2000. Two Israeli soldiers and two Lebanese civilians were wounded in the exchanges.
