"According to our information they have (deployed) more than 500 soldiers," the official said.
"There are certain groups within the Syrian administration that wish to make a military come back to Lebanon," the European official charged.
"It would be a crazy move, in our opinion. They know they would not win anything if they make such a move," he added.
He warned against the "threat posed by terrorists returning from Iraq on both Syria and Lebanon … and Europe as well."
"The response to terrorists is to fight them always," he stressed.
The European official said U.N. peacekeepers (UNIFIL) are doing a "good Job" in south Lebanon, but it is not for UNIFIL to "tackle the issue of Hizbullah weapons."
Hizbullah weapons should be handled by the Lebanese themselves, the European official noted.
"All UNSCR resolutions have called for disbanding militias. This doesn't fall under UNIFIL's jurisdiction, it requires a Lebanese political decision," he concluded.
