Khoja Urges Renewed Berri-Hariri Talks
Saudi Arabian Ambassador Abdul Aziz Khoja urged Wednesday pro and anti-government factions in Lebanon to resume dialogue and reach a settlement to the ongoing conflict before the upcoming Arab summit conference.
Khoja, in a dialogue with reporters after a meeting with Premier Fouad Saniora, urged Parliament speaker Nabih Berri, who represents the Hizbullah-led opposition, and MP Saad Hariri, who speaks for the March 14 majority alliance, to resume talks aimed at reaching a settlement to the conflict before the summit, scheduled for March 28 at the Saudi Capital of Riyadh.

"We hope for such an urgent meeting between Speaker Berri and MP Hariri to achieve a categorical solution … prior to the summit conference."

Khoja stressed that "I do not intervene in the domestic affairs of Lebanon … I hope the (Berri-Hariri) dialogue would resume because it is the only way to avoid a crisis."

The daily An Nahar on Wednesday said Khoja contacted the concerned parties in a bid to defuse tensions before they spread and get out of hand.

It quoted well-informed sources as saying that Riyadh threw its weight behind the various Lebanese groups to persuade them to facilitate the ongoing talks between Berri and Hariri ahead of the two-day Arab summit.

Berri and Hariri have held several rounds of talks over the past two weeks in an effort to resolve the crisis that has crippled the institutions. Berri on Tuesday accused the ruling majority of seeking to end the dialogue, but kept the door open for further talks.
