Phalange Party: Assad's Remarks 'a Second Message' after Abu Moussa's
Phalange Party on Monday condemned "the content of Syrian President Bashar Assad's interview with Seymour Hersh in The New Yorker and the subsequent clarifications 'all together.'"
"It seems that this approach in conveying 'clear' messages through newspapers and media outlets, which had prevailed when Lebanon was under tutelage, was and is still the one followed since the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon through Masnaa's gateway and the return through 'the window' of allies," a statement issued after Phalange's politburo weekly meeting said.

The gathered considered Assad's remarks as "a second message to Lebanon after less than one month from the first message delivered by (Fatah-Intifada leader) Abu Moussa."

They also deemed "the subsequent clarifications released by Syria through mediators and journalists" as "unconvincing attempts at justifying intervention in internal Lebanese affairs, ignoring the promises it had vowed to Lebanese, Arab, and western officials for keeping its hands off Lebanon."

Phalange Party's politburo questioned the meaning of diplomatic ties between Lebanon and Syria "as long as nobody has asked the Syrian ambassador to Lebanon for a clarification of these stances."

The party reiterated the invitation for supporters and friends to massively participate in the Feb. 14 mass rally on the occasion of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri's 5th assassination anniversary "to emphasize on the unity of March 14 forces and Cedar Revolution in the face of the 'non-sovereign' attack from many sides."

On the other hand, the party urged respect to municipal elections constitutional date to preserve "the Lebanese democratic system and the principle of power rotation."

The gathered warned against imposing new taxes on the people which "would push the Lebanese below poverty line."

Phalange Party called on the Christians in general and Maronites in particular to turn the 1600th anniversary of Saint Maroun's death into an occasion "for observing the reality of free Christian existence in this country."
