Suleiman: We Must Not Shy Away from Commitment to Baabda Declaration

President Michel Suleiman stressed that the international support exhibited for Lebanon during last week's United Nations General Assembly should be exploited through respecting the constitution, national pact, and the Baabda Declaration, reported As Safir newspaper on Thursday.

He told the daily: “It is unacceptable and unreasonable to shy away from our commitment to the Declaration.”

He explained that the agreement was discussed between all members of the national dialogue and any points of contention that arose were kept out of the Declaration.

These include March 14 camp suggestions to eliminate any mention of “flaws in the Taef Accord” and March 8 camp suggestions to eliminate any reference to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

“The Declaration serves all Lebanese powers because it calls for Lebanon to distance itself from regional conflicts,” said Suleiman.

“It didn't speak of keeping Lebanon neutral from the conflicts. Such a demand requires an agreement of its own,” explained the president.

The Baabda Declaration was approved unanimously during a national dialogue session in June 2012.

It calls for Lebanon to adopt a policy of disassociation from regional developments.
