Haifa Wehbeh Appointed as Telecom Ambassador for Humanitarian Causes

Caretaker Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui announced on Friday the appointment of singer Haifa Wehbeh as a telecommunications ambassador for humanitarian causes.

He made the announcement during a workshop on telecommunications information and road safety, which focused on the need for finding solutions to dangerous driving in Lebanon.

Sehnaoui explained that Wehbeh was chosen for her popularity and ability to influence them by delivering a message of awareness about the dangerous driving in Lebanon.

He then announced her appointment as ambassador of the “Don't Text and Drive” campaign.

The campaign, which covers 2013 and 2014, will include awareness messages on the radio, television, and billboards, as well as a number of charity events.

“Traffic accidents in Lebanon have reaped a frightful number of victims, which should motivate everyone to cooperate in order to place a comprehensive national awareness plan over this issue,” said Sehnaoui.

He revealed that 900 people were killed and 18,000 were wounded in traffic accidents in 2012, adding that texting and driving is a major factor in these accidents.

“The Telecommunications Ministry is committed towards its social duties,” he stressed.

For her part, Wehbeh hoped that her role in the “Don't Text and Drive” awareness campaign will make a difference in Lebanon.

She stressed that she will exert all her efforts through the media in order to highlight the dangers of reckless driving.

Addressing the youth, she said: “While driving, our lives and safety is much more important than answering a telephone call or a text message.”
