Report: Hizbullah Arrested Assailants of Bekaa Car Bomb

The assailants of a car bomb that the Lebanese army defused in the Bekaa Valley last Friday have been arrested by Hizbullah, An Nahar newspaper reported.

The army command has said in a terse communique that soldiers seized a black Buick rigged with around 350 kilograms of explosives.

It did not give more details although media reports said the car was also carrying mortar rounds and a high-tech remote control that triggers the explosives through a phone or a suicide bomber.

The reports had said that the army took over the vehicle between the towns of Maqne and Younine after armed gangs engaged in a gunbattle.

The suspects in the vehicle had also escaped, the reports said.

But An Nahar said Monday that Hizbullah members had monitored the movement of the car and when it reached the outskirts of Younine, far from inhabited areas, they opened fire on it.

They later seized the suspects in the vehicle, it said.

Around two hours later, the military inspected the car and defused the explosives, the newspaper added.

Despite the conflicting reports, An Nahar confirmed that the Buick was heading to Beirut through the international Baalbek-Homs highway.
