Charbel Says 'Difficult Phase' Awaiting Lebanon, Calls for Dialogue

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel announced on Saturday that Tripoli's figures agreed to unify the command in the northern city of Tripoli, warning also that a difficult phase is awaiting Lebanon.

“We have discussed during the security meeting between Tripoli's figures the points of weakness and strength of the security plan implemented in the city,” Charbel said after holding talks with Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi.

He added: “We agreed to unify the command and placing it in the hands of the military institution.”

“President Michel Suleiman and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati agreed to this plan.”

Charbel assured that security institutions and the state's bodies are “fully ready” to strengthen security and stability.

“We are facing several problems and obstacles, which are mainly triggered by foreign factors,” he noted.

The caretaker minister also warned that a “difficult phase” is awaiting the country in the first half of 2014.

“But if we, as politicians, knew how to communicate in these conditions, we could overcome all these obstacles.”

He continued: “The state is busy and factors pressuring political decisions in Lebanon have changed. This is why we have to have to be united for the sake of the country.”

“We have to adopt high national standards to be able to hold the upcoming presidential elections and form the cabinet on time.”
