Two Kidnapped Syrians Freed after Meqdad Clan Mediation Effort

Two Syrian abductees were released on Wednesday in the northern Bekaa town of Shaat, after al-Meqdad clan mediated with the kidnappers.

"Abdul Latif and Firas Meqdad were freed after the Meqdad clan mediated with the abductors,” the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA detailed on the incident: “One of the abductees' relatives filed a complaint at a police station in (the southern Beirut neighborhood of) Dahieh, saying he was contacted through the phone of one of the kidnapped men and was asked to pay USD 10,000 in ransom.”

Abdul Latif and Firas Meqdad were abducted three days ago.

The Meqdad clan is known for its illegal military wing and has been involved in several kidnapping incidents of Turkish and Syrian nationals to avenge the abduction of family member Hassan.

Many of the group's victims are members of the Free Syrian Army.
