UK's Cameron Protects Football Fans' World Cup Pints

British football fans: Your cups runneth over.

Prime Minister David Cameron has stepped in to overrule a government department that said bars couldn't stay open late during England's opening match against Italy at the World Cup in Brazil.

The British Beer and Pub Association had asked for a nationwide extension to licensing hours for the June 14 game, which starts at 11 p.m. British time.

Many British pubs close at 11 p.m., though some have licenses to open later.

The Home Office said no, but Cameron tweeted Monday: "I have ordered a rethink on pub opening times for England's World Cup games."

The government can relax the rules on occasions of "exceptional international, national or local significance," as they did during the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
