Salam Seeks to Ease Tension between Foes, Comfort People

Prime Minister Tammam Salam stressed on Monday that he is seeking to ease the troubles of the Lebanese people, voicing hope that the March 8 and 14 alliance would bridge the gap and amend ties.

“We are seeking to ease tension in the country and relief people,” Salam said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

“The stage requires hard work,” he pointed out.

On Saturday, PM Salam unveiled a compromise government, capping nearly 11 months of political wrangling.

Asked about how he will find common grounds between the rival March 14 and 8 parties despite the deep differences between them, Salam said: “We will seek to reach consensus over all the disputed matter.”

Salam and a ministerial committee established to draft the ministerial policy will hold meetings soon to find common ground and try to pass the cabinet formation at the parliament.

The 24 portfolios were divided into three groups, with the March 14 and 8 alliance each taking eight ministries, with candidates considered to be neutral allocated the remainder.

To preserve the delicate balance between the country's 18 sects, the government is also equally divided between Christian and Muslim representatives.
