U.S. Embassy Stresses Importance of Cultural Differences

The U.S. embassy hosted 40 Lebanese youth leaders at an Iftar on Thursday stressing the importance of respecting and celebrating cultural and religious differences.

The guests included members of civil society organizations, alumni of Department of State exchange programs, and students from different regions of Lebanon, the embassy said in a statement.

Chargé d’Affaires E. Candace Putnam told the group before breaking the fast that millions of American Muslims observe the traditions and obligations of the holy month of Ramadan.

Putnam stressed the importance of respecting and celebrating cultural and religious differences and reaffirmed the value of cultural exchange in promoting dialogue and mutual understanding.

“The U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section works to promote understanding through programs, workshops, and educational and cultural exchange programs,” said the statement.

“These exchange programs are particularly valuable in teaching Americans about the diversity, culture, and values of Lebanon and its people, as well as providing Lebanese a deeper understanding of the same among the American people,” it added.
