Six Detainees Questioned over Abra Clashes, One Released

The Military Court on Tuesday started questioning detainees accused of being involved in last year's bloody clashes in the town of Abra near the southern city of Sidon.

Brigadier General Khalil Ibrahim questioned six of the detainees, postponing the interrogation of the remaining suspects to September 4.

The court also approved the release of one man accused of a misdemeanor assault charge during the battles.

The Abra clashes of June 2013 erupted when supporters of Islamist Ahmed al-Asir opened fire on an army checkpoint near the cleric's headquarters in the Sidon suburb of Abra.

The attack and the fierce clashes that ensued left around 18 soldiers and more than 20 gunmen dead.

Several people were arrested following the battles while Asir is nowhere to be found.

The arrested suspects went on hunger strike in June 2014 in the southern Jezzine prison to protest the delay in holding their trials.
