Report: Army Intelligence Detains Prominent ISIL Leader

The army intelligence has detained a prominent leader at the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), who was allegedly planning to carry out terrorist acts in Lebanon.

A military source told al-Joumhouria newspaper published on Friday, that the arrest was carried out two days ago, without revealing any further details.

The source, who wished to remain anonymous, described the arrest as “important,” considering it a blow to the terrorist organizations.

The source pointed out that the detention comes in light of the heavy security measures taken by security forces to safeguard situation in the country, noting that it could play a role in the release of the abducted servicemen, who are held hostage by ISIL and the al-Qaida-affiliate al-Nusra Front.

The security force members were captured when the jihadists briefly overran the northeastern border town of Arsal in August, sparking fierce battles with Lebanese troops.

Four have been executed so far, and the jihadists have threatened to kill the remaining hostages unless there is a deal to free Islamist prisoners in Lebanon.
