Kanaan: FPM-LF Dialogue to Lead to Joint Action on Several Issues

MP Ibrahim Kanaan on Monday held a meeting with a Lebanese Forces official to set the stage for talks between Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun and LF chief Samir Geagea, stressing that the dialogue aims to contribute to joint action.

Kanaan told As Safir daily published on Tuesday that the “objective of the dialogue is to contribute to a joint action base on many issues.”

“It also aims to come up with a mechanism to organize ties (between the two sides) whether they reach an agreement or they disagree,” he said.

Kanaan held discussions on Monday with LF official Melhem Riachi as part of preparatory meetings the two men are holding to set the stage for the talks between Aoun and Geagea.

More meetings will be held in the coming days to decide on the date and venue of the talks.

An Nahar daily quoted sources as saying that the two presidential candidates are confident their relations would not deteriorate whether they agree or fail to strike a deal on controversial issues.

The rivalry between Aoun and Geagea has left the Baabda Palace vacant. Lebanon has been without a head of state since President Michel Suleiman's six-year term ended in May.

Aoun on Sunday expressed optimism that the LF would vote for him in the presidential race, noting that the two parties will tackle the issue of the rights of Christians before moving to discuss the presidential void.
