Khalil Refers to General Prosecution Case of Spoiled Shrimp in Lebanese Market

Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil referred to the General Prosecution on Monday a file on the introduction of spoiled frozen shrimp to the Lebanese market.

The General Prosecution will tackle how the products entered the market and the squandering of public funds through dodging customs fees.

The frozen shrimp entered Beirut port on June 28, 2013.

Khalil demanded that officials investigate this case with customs agents, “who did not perform their role properly or were complicit in covering up this operation.”

In addition, he called for carrying out an internal investigation at the customs administration to uncover those involved and responsible for the case.

The referral of the case to the General Prosecution is part of a major campaign launched by Khalil to uncover violations at the Beirut Port and Rafik Hariri International Airport.

On January 5, he announced that authorities had seized radioactive and poisonous material at the two facilities.
