Ahbash Member Gunned Down in Ain el-Hilweh

A Palestinian member of the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects, also known as al-Ahbash, was killed on Wednesday at the southern refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said unknown assailants gunned down Issa Fares at the camp's grocery market.

His murder caused tension but Palestinian security forces quickly deployed in the streets of Ain el-Hilweh to thwart any possible retaliatory attack.

But the association's media official Abdul Qader al-Fakhani denied to Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) that Fares is an Ahbash member.

Ain el-Hilweh, which lies near the coastal city of Sidon, is known to be a safe haven for wanted terrorists but the Lebanese authorities cannot arrest them.

By long-standing convention, the Lebanese army does not enter the country's 12 refugee camps, leaving security inside to the Palestinians themselves.

In April last year, Ahbash official Sheikh Orsan Suleiman was shot dead in Ain el-Hilweh as he was leaving a memorial service for an aid worker who had died during clashes at the nearby Mieh Mieh refugee camp.
