Daryan Wraps up Tour to Saudi Arabia, Says Prolonged Vacuum Worsens Crises

Grand Mufti Abdul Latif Daryan has warned that the failure to elect a new president will lead to more crises in the country, calling on MPs to choose a head of state to revitalize state institutions.

“The delay in the election of a president will create more crises,” Daryan old members of the Lebanese community in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Monday.

He spoke at the end of his visit to Saudi Arabia.

The Mufti rejected the paralysis, saying the presidential elections should be held to give back “vitality” to state institutions.

“We now have 24 heads of state but we need only one head for the Lebanese Republic or else things would get more complicated in the government,” he warned.

The cabinet assumed presidential powers after Lebanese lawmakers failed to find a successor to Michel Suleiman whose term ended in May.

But differences among cabinet ministers have stalled many projects.

“We should find the proper mechanism for the cabinet's work out of fear that there would be more paralysis,” he said.

Prime Minister Tammam Salam had agreed with ministers to have their unanimous support on the cabinet decisions when Suleiman's tenure ended.

He is now trying to amend the decision-making mechanism despite the rejection of several ministers.

Daryan urged Salam for more “patience,” announcing his backing for his efforts to remove the obstacles facing the government.

Daryan also spoke with the Lebanese community on the dialogue between Hizbullah and al-Mustaqbal movement.

The talks, which started in December under Speaker Nabih Berri's sponsorship in Ain el-Tineh, have relieved sectarian tension, he said.

He hoped that the dialogue would lead to an agreement on the presidential polls.

The Mufti urged the members of the community to have faith in their nation, saying its future will be bright due to the efforts exerted by its leaders.

“Among them is al-Mustaqbal leader ex-PM Saad Hariri who is seeking hard to bring (the Lebanese) closer through dialogue and contact with all sides in an attempt to preserve Lebanon,” he added.
