Shehayeb Agrees to Reduce Price of 1L of Milk to LL1,000

Agriculture Minister Akram Shehayeb agreed during a meeting with milk producers to fix the price of 1L of milk at LL1,000 to enable dairy factories to buy it.

Shehayeb pointed out that he agreed with the producers and manufacturers to establish an operation room at the ministry to receive complaints and follow up all crises in the milk sector.

The price of 1L of milk was fixed in December at LL1,100.

On Sunday, around 100 milk producers and farmers blocked the international road near the Bekaa town of Sarein and dumped 50 barrels of milk on the road to protest the drop in prices and their incapability to sell their production of fresh milk.

Shehayeb discussed with the producers of fresh milk and owners of dairy product factories the marketing of their products and the challenges that their sector is facing.

The farmers argue that a food safety campaign that forced the closure of several dairy factories in the Bekaa was the main reason behind the drop in prices.
