Japan Hires Halilhodzic as New National Football Team Coach

The Japanese football association has formally approved the appointment of Vahid Halilhodzic to become national team coach.

The hiring of the 62-year-old Bosnian was agreed upon at a meeting of the JFA's executive board on Thursday.

Japanese media reported that Halilhodzic will be paid an annual salary of $2.2 million.

Japan's previous coach, Javier Aguirre, was fired on February 4 over concerns that allegations of his involvement in a match-fixing scandal would interfere with qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

Halilhodzic guided Algeria into the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in Brazil last year.

The former Yugoslavia striker has been out of work since quitting Turkish side Trabzonspor in November following a poor run.

Halilhodzic is expected to arrive in Japan on Friday.
