Suleiman Condemns Plan by U.S. Group to Burn Quran, Extends Greetings to Lebanese

President Michel Suleiman on Wednesday condemned plans by a small church in the U.S. state of Florida to burn copies of the Quran to protest the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Such a move "would totally contradict with the logic of dialogue of civilizations, religions and culture," Suleiman said in a statement.

The leader of the Florida church, Rev. Terry Jones, said Tuesday he did not back off his plan to burn the Quran. The 58-year-old minister began receiving death threats after he proclaimed in July that he would stage "International Burn-a-Quran Day."

Suleiman called for contemplation into religious teachings and humanitarian values that stress on love and respect.

The president also extended greetings to the Lebanese on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.

Earlier in the day, Suleiman met with MP Nadim Gemayel and head of the General Security Department Maj. Gen. Wafiq Jezzini.
