Maronite Bishops Urge Election of President 'to Avoid Regional Dangers'

The Maronite Bishops Council reiterated on Wednesday the need to fill the vacuum in the presidency to allow Lebanon to properly confront regional dangers.

It said in a statement after its monthly meeting: “These dangers, as well as the international interest in Lebanon due to its cultural and religious diversity, should prompt officials to elect a president.”

“The successful elections will restore normalcy to the republic,” it added.

“Political blocs should assume their responsibilities and sense the dangers lurking in the region instead of laying blame on each other,” added the council.

Lebanon has been without a president since My 2014 after the term of Michel Suleiman ended without the election of a successor.

Ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a compromise candidate have thwarted the polls.

Hizbullah's Loyalty to the Resistance and MP Michel Aoun's Change and Reform blocs have been boycotting electoral sessions due to the dispute.

The presidential vacuum has crippled the functioning of the government and the parliament.
