Peugeot Citroen Reports High Demand
French car maker PSA Peugeot Citroen said on Tuesday it would temporarily boost production at its Slovak plant in response to high demand.
"The company, currently operating in two shifts, will prolong the second shift by one hour for three weeks, starting January 10," PSA spokesman Peter Svec told Agence France Presse.
The company, which produces cars mostly for the German, French and Italian markets, has weathered the global slump in demand by focusing on small green cars.
In 2009, PSA produced 205,000 vehicles at its plant at Trnava in western Slovakia, raising its output by 10 percent against the previous year despite the global downturn.
"Production in 2010 stabilized at slightly less than 200,000 units," Svec added.
Slovakia's auto industry, the driver for the former communist economy, was recovering from the global downturn over the course of 2010.
In October, combined car output at plants run by KIA, France's PSA Peugeot Citroen and Germany's Volkswagen grew by almost one third from the level in the same month last year, according to Slovakia's statistics office.
