Embassies Warn against Assassinations as Charbel Says Situation Under Control

Embassies and diplomats are hinting that the assassinations wave and bombings will return to Lebanon, fearing that the turmoil in the region will affect Lebanon, An Nahar newspaper reported on Wednesday.

An official told the daily that the assassinations and bombings rumors are not based on reliable information but on hints from embassies and diplomats.

He stressed that the statements made by Interior Minister Marwan Charbel in Paris were taken out of their context.

Charbel attended in October a security exhibition in Paris where he warned against a new wave of political assassinations in Lebanon due to information obtained by the ministry.

He said that the turmoil in the neighboring countries could spread to Lebanon.

The official warned against adopting rumors that affect the security situation, adding that “Lebanon isn’t isolated from (the developments in the region); however, there are ongoing efforts to protect it from any danger.”

Meanwhile, Charbel said Wednesday that the “security situation is linked to the political conditions.”

He said in comments to Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) that the security situation is “excellent,” noting that the ministry has “a comprehensive plan” to safeguard Lebanon.
