Geagea Urges International Community to Intervene to 'Halt Massacres in Syria'

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea held on Wednesday the international community responsible for the prolongation of the war in Syria, labeling the developments in the country as a “major humanitarian tragedy.”

He urged via Twitter the international community to “intervene quickly in Syria to halt the massacres taking place there.”

The intervention should also pave the way “for the overthrow of the regime of President Bashar Assad and the establishment of a free democracy in Syria.”

“The community will otherwise be faced with a new hundred years war in Syria and neighboring regions that may take various forms,” Geagea tweeted.

Furthermore, he noted that the war in Syria has developed into an Iranian-Russian confrontation “with some terrorist groups and several other groups that have revolted against the regime.”

The Assad regime has fallen because those fighting in Syria are Iran and Russia, he added.

Pro-regime forces have made a series of gains this month in Aleppo province, severing rebel supply lines and prompting tens of thousands to flee towards the Turkish border.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced on Wednesday that more than 500 people have been killed since the major Russian-backed regime offensive in Aleppo began.
