Oman Leader Home after 'Good' Health Check in Germany

Oman's Sultan Qaboos returned on Tuesday from Germany after a successful medical checkup on his progress following lengthy treatment there in 2014 and 2015, a royal court statement said.

The 75-year-old monarch spent around two months in Germany and came home "after completing routine medical examinations... which showed good, hoped-for results", said the statement read out on state television.

The unmarried sultan has made only short public appearances since returning in March 2015 after eight months' treatment in Germany, prompting uncertainty over his successor.

State television reported at the time that his treatment was a "total success."

There has never been any official statement on the nature of his illness.

But according to a diplomatic source in Muscat, the sultan, who has ruled Oman since overthrowing his father in a bloodless 1970 coup, has colon cancer.
