Jumblat: If Proportional Representation Aims to Weaken Our Sway, We Got the Message

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat on Friday voiced his total rejection of implementing the proportional representation system in the 2013 parliamentary elections.

In an interview on Hizbullah’s Al-Manar television, Jumblat said: “Before we discuss proportional representation, let’s discuss how we can limit the use of political spending, and unfortunately we have only a little influence left, limited to the so-called Druze electorate, and if the aim is to undermine this influence, then we got the message.”

The cabinet has been recently discussing a draft law proposed by Interior Minister Marwan Charbel on adopting the proportional representation system in the upcoming elections, under which Lebanon would be divided into 10 to 14 medium-sized electorates.

As Jumblat admitted that his bloc had no ability to confront the electoral lists fielded by major political alliances across the country, he called for maintaining the current law.

“Let’s get back to the draft laws proposed by (ex-interior minister Ziad) Baroud and (veteran ex-minister Fouad) Boutros before we discuss minister Charbel’s proposal,” Jumblat added.
