Romania: Culture Minister Resigns over Opera Dispute

Romania's culture minister has tendered his resignation amid a bitter dispute at the country's main opera house involving internationally renowned ballerina Alina Cojocaru.

Vlad Alexandrescu announced that he would be stepping down in a posting on his Facebook page Wednesday, after he failed to solve a conflict at the Bucharest National Opera that has seen three shows canceled so far.

In the latest episode, Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg, a Danish choreographer and ballet dancer, were on a list of nine artists who were banned Tuesday by interim management from entering the premises unsupervised. The move was widely criticized.

Under the previous management, tensions arose between Kobborg and some opera employees, who claimed he was overpaid.

Kobborg, who is engaged to Cojocaru, later resigned due to tensions with interim management.
