Hizbullah Says Proportional Representation ‘Reasonable’ without Determining its Stance
The head of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Mohammed Raad said on Saturday that adopting the proportional representation in the new electoral law is “reasonable,” noting that Hizbullah hasn’t taken the final decision concerning the matter.
“In principle it is reasonable but there’s also a need for a balanced representation system. However, we haven’t taken yet our final decision,” Raad told al-Manar TV in an interview.
He stressed that “it’s still early to discuss the details of the proposed (proportional representation) draft law… We need to achieve more justice and wider representation.”
Raad stated that interior minister Marwan Charbel’s electoral law proposal is being examined; however, he said that the party “hasn’t yet taken its final decision until all formulas are examined.”
He noted that the constitution preserves the rights of each sect.
“The difficulty remains in finding a true will to adopt an electoral law formula,” Raad added.
The cabinet has been recently discussing a draft law proposed by Charbel on adopting the proportional representation system in the upcoming elections in 2013, under which Lebanon would be divided into 10 to 14 medium-sized electorates.
