"I've had a strange love affair with grass. It wasn't love at first sight. It's the kind of growing love, like when you have an old school friend you meet after 10 years and suddenly you realize, oh, that's the one, I actually kind of like him. So that's the type of love that I have with grass because it wasn't love at first sight. I was horrible at the beginning."

Sidelines

Better late than never

- After a rain-hit week, the first round finally ended just before 1:00pm (1200 GMT) on Thursday, almost two days later than scheduled.

Grass always greener for Lisicki

- Sabine Lisicki, the 2013 runner-up, shines at Wimbledon and struggles at the other three Slams. The German has 27 wins at the All England Club compared to 29 combined at the Australian, French and US Opens.

Quick response

- Fabio Fognini was in no mood to talk off-topic about his homeland. Asked, "This has nothing to do with tennis, but your thoughts on Italy," he replied: "So don't ask me."

Putt the question

- John Isner filled the time between rain breaks with some locker room mini-golf. "The long days in the locker room the last two days were just brutal. You can only play so much putt-putt."

Towel play

- Isner took advantage of his rain-affected first round match to swipe an impressive haul of Wimbledon towels -- worth £29 ($39, 35 euros) each. "I was able to make out with six of them in this last match. Shhh! 1‑1, left the court: there's two. Finished 7‑6, 1‑3: two more. Then today: there's two more. I'm dishing them out like candy. I certainly have a lot of Wimbledon towels."

Marathon men

- Australian Grand Slam debutant Matthew Barton defeated fellow qualifier Albano Olivetti, the world 793 from France, in five sets and in four hours, three minutes. The first round match started Tuesday, resumed Wednesday and then finished mid-day Thursday.

Sun not shining for Willis

- Wimbledon sensation Marcus Willis -- and Liverpool supporter -- turned down sponsorship from The Sun newspaper over the tabloid's coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, The Times reported.

Numbers up

800 - Ivo Karlovic broke through and beyond 800 aces in his Wimbledon career but he still lost his second round tie to Lukas Lacko.

56 - number of aces hit by Albano Olivetti of France in his five-set defeat to fellow qualifier Matthew Barton of Australia.

Royal Box watch

- In the best seat on Center Court was Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, the wife of heir to the throne Prince Charles.

She was joined by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) president Sebastian Coe and former England cricket captain Bob Willis.

Meanwhile in the semi-posh seats were actor Ian McKellen as well as Malaysia's squash star Nicol David.
