Choucair Says Lebanon's Economy Cannot Survive without Gulf States

Chairman of the Federation of the Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Lebanon Mohammed Choucair stated that President Michel Aoun's visit to Saudi Arabia will restore ties back to normal between the two countries, the pan-Arab Asharq al-Awsat daily reported on Saturday.

“President Aoun's visit to Saudi Arabia next week, will be the key for the return of brethren Gulf nationals back in Lebanon. The visit will put relations between the two countries back on the right track,” Choucair told the daily in an interview.

He went on to say: “The former Lebanese government has made mistakes against the Kingdom,” he added, referring to when Lebanon abstained from voting on Arab League and world Muslim body statements condemning attacks by protesters on Saudi Arabia's embassy and consulate in Iran in 2015.

“Lebanon cannot economically survive without the Gulf countries,” added Choucair, emphasizing that Saudi Arabia constitutes as much as half Lebanon's financial returns as the result of economic relations with Gulf countries

President Michel Aoun will visit Saudi Arabia and Qatar next week in his first foreign trip abroad to discuss bilateral relations between the countries, in addition to the situation in the region.

He is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia on Monday and Tuesday, Qatar on Wednesday and Thursday.
