Hariri Dubs Aoun's Visit to SA 'Historic', Chairs Cabinet Meeting

The cabinet convened at the Grand Serail on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Saad Hariri and in the absence of the ministers accompanying President Michel Aoun in his trip to Saudi Arabia and Qatar which Hariri described as "historic," the National News Agency reported.

“The cabinet has set a new vision to discuss the issue of displaced Syrians, and agreed some amendments to the committee related,” said Culture Minister Ghattas Khoury after the meeting, speaking on behalf of Information Minister Melhem Riachi who accompanies Aoun.

The cabinet emphasized the need to adopt a “strategy to find a solution for displaced Syrians in Lebanon along with those residing in it,” added Khoury.

Lebanon hosts approximately 1.5 million Syrian refugees which amounts to around one in five people in the country.

At the beginning of the meeting, Hariri described Aoun's trip to Saudi Arabia as “historical and successful by all standards,” and hailed relations between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

Aoun arrived in Qatar Wednesday where he met with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Than after concluding a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia where he met with Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz.

Aoun arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday on his first foreign trip since taking office, starting an Arab tour.

He is accompanied by a large ministerial delegation comprising the ministers Jebran Bassil (foreign affairs), Marwan Hamadeh (education), Ali Hassan Khalil (finance), Yaaqoub al-Sarraf (defense), Nouhad al-Mashnouq (interior), Pierre Raffoul (presidency affairs), Melhem Riachi (information) and Raed Khoury (economy).
