Palestinian Stabs Israeli Officer, is Shot

A Palestinian stabbed and lightly wounded a border policeman in the Israeli coastal city of Netanya on Tuesday before being shot and wounded, police said.

The attack came as US President Donald Trump was on a visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories as part of his maiden foreign tour.

Police identified the assailant as a man in his mid-forties from the nearby city of Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank.

They said he used "a sharp object" to stab the officer in the neck in what was being investigated as a "nationalistic attack."

A woman passerby was also lightly wounded by glass shards when the officer opened fire.

A wave of unrest that broke out in October 2015 has claimed the lives of 266 Palestinians, 41 Israelis, two Americans, two Jordanians, an Eritrean, a Sudanese and a Briton, according to an AFP count.

Most of the Palestinians killed were carrying out knife, gun or car-ramming attacks, the Israeli authorities say.

Others were shot dead during protests or clashes, while some were killed in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip.

The violence has subsided in recent months.
