U.S. to Grow at 2.2% in 2017, 2.3% in 2018, IMF Says
The IMF on Tuesday raised its 2017 economic forecast for the United States but warned the coming years would likely see sluggish gains in the absence of growth-oriented policy from Washington.
Citing strong market confidence in the world's largest economy, the global crisis lender said U.S. GDP was now expected to grow by 2.2 percent this year, up a tenth of a percentage point from a forecast published three months ago.
The U.S. economy will also likely expand by 2.3 percent in 2018. The rosier outlook was based in part on a recovery in the energy sector and growing business investments earlier in the year.
But the IMF said that -- absent reforms and stimulus and with a Republican economic agenda suffering lengthy delays in Congress -- the U.S. was unlikely to sustain this pace.
