Report: Bkirki Refuses Meddling in Elections

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi “stands at an equal distance” from all political parties and refuses to interfere in the parliamentary electoral process, al-Joumhouria daily reported on Thursday.

“Bkirki stand at an equal distance from all candidates, particularly in the Christian regions. Bkirki does not support anyone (candidate or party) at the expense of another,” the daily quoted Bkirki sources.

They stressed that Rahi “has not, will not interfere in the formation of electoral lists. Bkirki refuses to enter the corridors of the electoral process.”

Political parties are gearing up for the country's first legislative elections in nine years. The majority have announced their candidates to run in the polls.

Lebanon is staging its 2018 elections based on a new complex proportional representation system and 15 electoral districts. It replaces the winner-takes-all system that had governed Lebanon’s elections since 1943.

The polls are scheduled on May 6.
