Satire TV Hosts Hisham Haddad, Abu Talal Under Scrutiny Over 'Bible' Remarks

The Episcopal Media Committee has filed a complaint with the Lebanese National Audiovisual Media Council over two satire TV shows that made “cynical references against segments from the holy Bible”, the National News Agency reported on Thursday.

NNA said the Audiovisual Media Council received the complaint filed against weekly satire entertainment programs one hosted by Hisham Haddad on LBCI, and another on al-Jadeed TV hosted by satirist character called Abu Talal.

The two hosts have “addressed segments from the holy Bible in a comical manner,” said NNA.

Recordings from the programs will be submitted to the media council for assessment.

The appropriate measures will be taken in coordination with Information Minster, Melhem Riachi, it added.

Lebanon's media endured a string of court cases and judicial investigations as Lebanese authorities are getting tough on free speech ahead of national elections.

Recently, officials have summoned leading talk show hosts to court over on-air remarks and sentencing an analyst to jail for comments she made in Washington about the Lebanese army.
