Aoun Urges Lebanese 'Solidarity' amid Tense Regional Situation

President Michel Aoun on Thursday urged national “solidarity” in Lebanon amid the skyrocketing tensions in Syria and the region.

“Today, more than ever, Lebanon needs further solidarity among its sons, and the national interest should come before any other personal, partisan or sectarian interest,” Aoun said in a speech at a Lebanese expat conference in Beirut.

The president noted that “the main threats that are facing us are the tense regional and international situations,” only hours after an unprecedented Israeli-Iranian military flare-up in Syria and days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced Washington's withdrawal from the nuclear agreement with Iran.

“Lebanon is suffering from the repercussions of a war in which it has no decision and the burdens it is shouldering are much bigger than its capacity,” Aoun added.

“It has dealt with the Syrian refugee crisis according to the principle of brotherly ties and humanitarian solidarity, but the displacement has turned into a pressing problem that is threatening the country on all levels,” the president warned.
