U.N. Chief Urges Govt. to Prevent Hizbullah from Amassing Arms

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reportedly urged the Lebanese government to take all the necessary measures to prevent Hizbullah from obtaining more weapons.

In his latest report about the implementation of U.N. Security Council 1559 (2004), a copy of which was obtained by Asharq al-Awsat newspaper, Guterres also warns of dire consequences from the continued involvement of the Iran-backed group in the Syrian conflict.

Expressing concern over reports of roles for Hizbullah in other conflict zones in the region, Guterres cautioned that such activities carry the threat of entangling Lebanon in regional conflicts.

The U.N. chief also emphasized the importance of abiding by Lebanon's declared policy of dissociation from the region's conflicts and the 2012 Baabda Declaration.

Commenting on visits to Lebanon's border with Israel by senior Iraqi Shiite militants, Guterres warned that such moves undermine the state's authority and contradict with the spirit of the dissociation policy.
