Report: Guterres Urges Government, Army to Prevent Hizbullah from Acquiring Weapons

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned in a report on the implementation of resolution 1559, of Hizbullah’s retention of "large and sophisticated military capabilities," and called on the Lebanon to take measures to transform it into a “civilian party,” Asharq al-Awsat daily said on Saturday.

In his 29th semi-annual report, Guterres warned of Hizbullah’s growing military capabilities asking the government and Lebanon’s Armed Forces to take all necessary measures to prevent Hizbullah from acquiring weapons in order to turn it into a “purely civilian political party,” according to the newspaper.

Security Council diplomats told the newspaper that the United States was “unhappy” with the Secretary-General's latest report on the progress made regarding implementation of UN resolution 1701 in terms of compliance with its arms embargoes by Lebanese and non-Lebanese parties, most notably Hizbullah.
