Aoun: We Hope Syrian People Will Be Diligent Enough to Thwart Strife

Free Patriotic Movement MP Michel Aoun noted on Wednesday that attempts to create strife are taking place in Syria, praising President Bashar Assad’s efforts to implement reform.

He hoped that the “Syrian people would be diligent enough to thwart the strife.”

He made his statements before a delegation from the Syrian city of Tartous.

“They are attempting to create instability under the guise of opposition demands for reform,” added the MP.

Aoun stressed that reform is needed in Syria, saying that they should take place in phases “because democracy cannot be established without first educating the people about it.”

“An immediate shift to democracy will inevitably create problems and chaos,” he stated.

“There are attempts to transform the dispute in the region from an Arab-Israeli one to an inter-Arab conflict,” he continued.

“This is aimed at fragmenting the Arab world through creating sectarian strife,” said the FPM leader.

He later told Syrian television al-Dunia: “We hope that peace will return to Syria and that the path of reform will be adopted.”

“Syria is headed towards stability and peace,” he stressed.

He also criticized the media coverage of the Syrian crisis, accusing some outlets of misleading the public and fabricating stories.
